Kfarmer tagged me... so, here goes.
10 years ago: I was a poor starving playwright/director who was putting on shows bi-weekly on a stage in my backyard. The "season" usually ran from the end of May till the weekend after Labor Day. This endeavour was called
WeedWacker Theatre. Attended mostly by friends, family and neighbors who brought picnic fixin's and donations of moolah in appreciation for what they experienced. The line-up included anything from music, theatre... whatever I could charm my performer & artist friends into doing. My theatre company,
Theatre J'Nerique was also rehearsing a show I wrote, "
Turn Up The Torment," for production at the
San Francisco Fringe Festival. That was a pretty busy year that also included several "Theatre in the Galleries" gigs commissioned by the
Fresno Metropolitan Museum. I think I wrote and produced about 7 plays that year. On a personal front... let's just say that my work is a demanding mistress... but not enough to preclude the odd encounter or two or three...
5 years ago: My theatre company scored in a major way. We were given a 200 seat theater space to manage that was housed at an old Jewish Temple. With continuing restoration and renovation I penned and mounted a new play "
The Dead Guy Show", which was produced at the new and improved
Sanctuary Stage Theatre. (For the record, that was the last full length play I wrote.) Managing the theater also brought in a regular income stream and the subsequent teaching gig... which I'll be leaving at the end of this month. On the personal front... same as 10 years ago.
1 Year ago. I was starting what I thought was going to be my last year of teaching. The grind and the fact that we had gone through 4 principals in five years was really getting to me. Besides, I had always maintained that I just wasn't built to teach. I was also involved in pre-production (as I am now) for the 4th annual
Rogue Performance Festival, a fringe style festival that my theatre company had started in
2002. The local newspaper actually
reviewed 3 of my shows that were produced in the festival earlier in the year. This ruined my plans for a future Oscar/Tony speech in thanking the local press for never reviewing any of my shows.
Yesterday: Woke up. Got out of bed. Dragged my ass into the shower. Turned up at work. Went home to my next gig. Checked out the news. Went to sleep. Blogged to get my writing chops going again. Been working on a new play loosly based on an episode from the "SnowWhite" story - it's set in Vegas.

As you might imagine, not many things drive me to leave blog comments, but I had to commend you on the first blog I've personally seen make mention of Scrooge McDuck. Nicely done.
I'm with you on knowing the lyrics to four out of five of the songs you mentioned (can't hang with JC Superstar, though I probably know more lyrics to it than I'd like to admit: "I... don't know how to looo-oooovvve hiiiiiiim..." "What's the buzz, tell me what's a-happenin'..."). I also loved London and Venice (but I loved Florence and Rome more, not to mention Paris and Prague); and I have a couple of friends in Egypt right now, who are enjoying themselves very much. As for Malaysia, I didn't realize how much I wanted to visit there until I started reading your blog. I may not read it every day, but every day I read it, I enjoy it. Thanks for that.
zonthar, good to see you here! comment more, puleeze!
generik, thanks for the kind comment... and knowing the songs. I'm sure scarysquirrelman has told you we are going up to the fringe next weekend in sf. hope to see you there! cheers!
